Abstract Results of ergometric and other studies in 44 and 43 miners working respectively at low (860m) and high altitudes (2,800m) in the Tsian'-Shan mountains (USSR). Maximal aerobic power was relatively poor in the high-altitude workers. Studies of functional parameters of mental stress caused by arduous work in difficult climatic conditions showed the cardiovascular and respiratory systems of high-altitude miners to be under very much greater stress than in those working at low altitudes. These differences must be taken into account when organising mining work on a scientific basis.
