Abstract Results of a survey covering 1,575 men and 1,690 women aged between 38 and 57 years, and evaluation by computerisation of data collected concerning chronic disease and ill-health, and their degree of severity. The following occupational categories were covered by the survey: agricultural workers, unskilled workers, housewives, skilled workers, administrative and technical personnel, "white-collar" workers and retired workers. Diseases and conditions considered included: neuroses, alcoholism, thyroid disease, deafness and hearing loss, hypertension, varicose conditions, bronchitis, pharyngitis, gastritis and peptic ulcer, hernia, liver damage, rheumatic disease, etc. The highest incidence of chronic disease was found among the agricultural workers and housewives, followed by unskilled workers and skilled workers; the lowest incidence was amongst the white-collar workers.
