Abstract Brief description of an experiment conducted over 12 months in Swedish metalworking shops where soapy water was used instead of mineral oil as a cutting fluid. Results: no oil mist, no eczema. The risk of oxidation of machinery and workpieces is averted by the thin layer of soap which forms on the metal surfaces, and by regular cleaning. Cutting speeds of 400m/min are possible; the service life of the cutting tool remains unchanged. The cost of soap is one-third that of oil.
