Abstract Description of a local exhaust ventilation system mounted - after trial and rejection of other systems such as remote control - on a gas cutting machine for large metal sheets. Each cutting torch is enclosed in a water-cooled jacket through which fumes are removed by exhaust ventilation, and which also affords protection against thermal and visible radiation. The jackets are lined with strips of sintered copper which absorb some of the noise. In addition to the exhaust ventilation upwards, an exhaust ventilation carriage moves underneath the rods forming the workpiece table. The movement of the carriage is synchronised with that of the cutting torches. The carriage has water-cooled exhaust rims and a vibrating chute for the removal of cuttings and incandescent particles.
