Abstract This research report is a retrospective analysis of causes of death among town gas workers and in some control industries (970 deaths between 1953 and 1972): population and methodology; relation between certain causes of death and smoking habits or type and duration of exposure; morphological aspects. A higher rate of mortality due to cancer of the respiratory or urinary tract was noted particularly in workers at the coke oven batteries and coal tar processing installations. The relation between the type of workpost and the occurrence of cancer was statistically very significant. 1 in 6 of the exposed workers died from cancer of the respiratory tract, compared to 1 in 16 among non-exposed persons. An average of 30-35 years elapsed between commencement of exposure and death due to cancer of the respiratory or urinary tract. Analysis of the results in the light of other research.
