Abstract Noise levels in auto screw machining shops, which often greatly exceed 95dBA, are chiefly due to noise from bar-feed tubes and automatic lathes, to the congestion and size of the premises and the acoustic conditions. The results of surveys in 7 shops are given, showing sound pressure levels measured and suggesting noise control possibilities by taking action to modify the above factors. This in-plant investigation was supplemented by a study of the efficacy of various methods for reducing noise in simulated conditions.
