Abstract Results of more than 10,000 carbon disulfide determinations in the air of viscose rayon spinning rooms and of medical examinations in 380 workers exposed to CS2 and 390 controls. Morbidity (automatic disturbances, polyneuritis, hypertension) was markedly higher in the exposed group. In studies in rats (exposure to 1, 10 and 100mg/m3) prolonged inhalation of the 2 lower levels caused functional and pathological changes (red and white blood cell counts, haemoglobin). Consequences of this chronic exposure included gonadotrophic effects in females, seen as disturbances of the oestrus cycle. Reduction of the Soviet TLV from 10 to 1mg/m3 is proposed.
