Abstract White rats were exposed for several months to various concentrations of mineral oil aerosols used in cutting fluids for certain machining operations. To reproduce the actual conditions of thermal decomposition during cooling of cutting tools, the fluids were pyrolysed beforehand at 450-500°C. Inhalation of the aerosols gives rise to functional disturbances of the nervous, cardiovascular and respiratory systems, liver and adrenals, and to a decrease in immunological resistance. A synergistic effect of oil mists and pyrolysis fumes was noted.
