Abstract The electric field around high-voltage conductors (up to 400kV and more) has harmful effects on the health of exposed workers, who in addition are disturbed by discharges received on contact with conducting structures which become charged by induction. Duration of exposure should be limited according to the intensity of the field (duration limits are tabulated). The article describes various protective measures in detail: screens (including clothing incorporating metallic-scrim), work in an area where the intensity of the field is minimal or reduced by the presence of shielding structures, particular precautions for work in a substation or on underground cable. Recapitulation of basic rules.
