Title Medicine and the North Sea - Emergencies for the general practitioner. Hospital support in off-shore emergencies.

Abstract In the first of these 2 articles (p.50-52), F.G.G. Shepherd describes a local team of general practitioners in Aberdeen (Scotland) providing a service for the oil companies in the area, and shows some of the types of cases that have to be dealt with and problems of communication and transport encountered. In the second article (p.53-56), D.M. Proctor describes the role and needs of a hospital surgical team providing support in off-shore emergencies on rigs and ships in the North Sea: organisation, equipment, transportation of patients. No consideration is given to problems of handling patients under pressure.
