Abstract This guidance note contains sections devoted to: hazards of methyl bromide (skin burns; massive accumulation of fluid in lungs following inhalation of high concentrations; damage to brain and nervous system and possibly to kidneys); employers' and workers' responsibilities; qualifications and duties of operators; compliance of fumigant with British Standards (cylinders; cans; storage and transport; warning agents); detecting equipment; precautions (halide detector lamp; gas detector tubes); fumigation of buildings, of stacks of commodities, of ships, freight containers, soil and compost in greenhouses, etc. Data on properties of methyl bromide, methods of protection, protective clothing, first aid and medical treatment, legislation and documentation are appended.
