Abstract Studies in 15 types of plant are described, which indicated the existence of characteristic empirical relationships between wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) and outdoor meterorological conditions. Linear regression models were developed taking the following weighted variables into account: dry-bulb temperature, ventilated wet-bulb temperature, globe temperature, wind speed, total sky cover, and relative humidity. Three sets of relatively simple equations can be used to calculate WBGT in hot work environments; these are designed, respectively, to estimate future WBGT levels from weather forecasts, current levels from current values obtained from a nearby weather station, and current levels from measurements made in the immediate vicinity of the worksite concerned. Application of the models is described in detail.
