Title Woodpeckers and head injury.
Bibliographic information 28 Feb. 1976, Vol.1, No.7957, p.454-455. Illus. 9 ref.
Abstract Studies in woodpeckers are described, from which it emerges that impact protective systems radically different from those in common use could be developed: results suggest the use of a lighter, thicker, form-fitting firm but spongy helmet with a relatively thin and hard outer shell, if possible combined with a protective neck collar to dampen sudden, unexpected, rotation of the head.
