Abstract Results of an occupational health survey of 20 horticultural workers who treated tomatoes and cucumbers with pesticides in hothouses (determination of insecticide residues on the hands and plants, clinical and laboratory tests). The morbidity of these workers was high (haemopoiesis disorders and liver and kidney functional impairment). The authors noted a correlation between application periods of organophosphorus and thiocarbamate pesticides and inhibition periods of serum cholinesterases. Given that hothouse workers are exposed all year round and they work in unfavourable microclimates, their occupational risks are greater than growers who only work in the warm season.
