Title Major fire and explosion hazards in hydrocarbon processing plants.
Bibliographic information Nov. 1975, Vol.12, No.9, p.11-14. 6 ref.
Abstract Reference is made to a number of disasters caused by unconfined vapour cloud explosions involving large quantities of hydrocarbon gas or vapour mixed with air. The author considers in turn the factors which constitute the hazard inherent in hydrocarbon handling and processing plants and units (the hazard rating scale developed by the Dow Chemical Co. is discussed) and the special but not uncommon hazard presented by the sudden mixture of water with hot hydrocarbon liquid (or vice versa) resulting in the generation of steam and the development of considerable pressure surge.
