Abstract Analytical methods were reviewed and one chosen for each substance. The chosen methods were tested and modified if necessary to give procedures that were easy to use, had equipment easily available, and were sensitive enough for proposed Environmental Protection Agency standards. Electron microscopy was chosen for asbestos, atomic absorption spectroscopy for beryllium, lead, and cadmium, spectrophotometry and fluorometry for selenium, and flameless atomic absorption spectroscopy for mercury. Although the analytical methods were primarily for factory stack gas streams, workers' environments were also included in the discussion.
