Abstract Light-metal fires can be very violent (temperatures up to 2,500°C) and difficult to extinguish. The article outlines practical measures for preventing fires when machining magnesium and similar alloys (cooling of part being machined, use of coolants free from flammble liquids, smooth floors for easy and complete elimination of metal chips, collection of metal waste in tight refractory containers, etc.). Since water accelerates the burning rate of light-alloy fires, either a ternary eutectic compound powder (containing chlorates of sodium, barium and potassium) or trimethoxyboroxine (a liquid forming a glassy coating) should be used for fighting these fires,
