Title Conditions of work, life and medical care on board an offshore oil prospection vessel in the North Sea
Original title Conditions de travail, de vie et d'exercice médical à bord d'une barge de travaux pétroliers en mer du Nord. [in French]
Bibliographic information Mar. 1975, Vol.36, No.3, p.137-144. Illus. 5 ref.
Abstract This article highlights the exceptional environmental conditions (sea environment, latitude) which directly affect the working conditions of those employed on board: meteorological factors (cold, wind, long nights); acrobatic nature of certain operations which are particularly dangerous for land workers inadapted to the sea environment (e.g. welders, oil rig and pipeline personnel). The heterogeneity of the workforce, the physical and to an even greater extent the psychological isolation may constitute factors causing inadaptation among personnel attracted mainly by the high remuneration. In view of the great disparity among the ship's personnel, according to nationality and category of work performed, it would appear urgently necessary to draft legislation and adopt preventive measures to supervise and improve the recruitment methods and conditions of work, particularly of those employed on board these vessels who are not seafarers by occupation.
