Abstract Employing electron microscopy and examination of lung biopsy material by X-ray diffraction, the authors undertook a very thorough study of the last of 5 cases of "tungstosis" observed in a plant processing tungsten carbide and other hard metals. The greatest exposure occurred in powder mixing, grinding and machining of cemented carbide workpieces. Fibrosis is preceded by an irritative syndrome caused by dust inclusions, without radiological signs, which disappears after the worker has been removed from the hazard. Measurement of CO diffusion by the steady-state method appears to be the essential element in screening and supervising exposed workers.
