Title Pneumoconiosis in painters dealing with tonoko: three cases of "tonoko-lung".
Bibliographic information Nov. 1974, Vol.114, No.3, p.295-297. Illus. 4 ref.
Abstract Tonoko (78.5%SiO2, 10%Al2O3), a wood filler widely used in furniture manufacturing in Japan, has not been considered a pneumoconiosis-producing agent. Three cases of pneumoconiosis were discovered in 4 workers engaged in a furniture finishing process who had used the material daily for over ten years. Their working room environment was always dusty and tonoko was probably the main ingredient of the dust. Analysis revealed that tonoko contains about 50% quartz, and the results supported our assumption that their lung condition might be caused by tonoko inhalation.
