Title The acute inhalation toxicity in rats from the pyrolysis products of four fluoropolymers.
Bibliographic information Dec. 1974, Vol.30, No.3, p.369-376. Illus. 9 ref.
Abstract The potential toxicity of the pyrolysis products from polymeric formulations containing vinylidene fluoride (VF2), hexafluoropropene (HFP), polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and tetrafluoroethylene (TFE) was studied in rats, gross and histological examinations being performed. The hydrogen-containing elastomers VF2 and HFP produced a less toxic pyrolysate than PTFE. No correlation could be established between hydrolysable fluoride levels and lethality of the pyrolysates. Death following exposure occurred within 48h as a result of pulmonary oedema and haemorrhage.
