Abstract The presence of combustible dusts and gases is likely in refuse comminution plants. Since metal elements also enter such plants, a gas or dust explosion hazard from sparks must be borne in mind. A study of explosions in closed containers and of safety measures is followed by a report on 3 series of tests in a refuse comminution plant. An explosion extinguishing barrier was developed which within certain limiting conditions reduces the explosion hazard to an acceptable level. Details are given of the installation of such an extinguishing unit, and suggestions made for the general operating safety of refuse comminution plants.
