Title Simplified methods for estimating hearing protector performance.
Bibliographic information June 1974, Vol.8, No.6, p.20-27. Illus. 6 ref.
Abstract Three methods for estimating the noise attenuation effectiveness of hearing protectors are described and evaluated, using typical noise spectra and attenuation data of 33 different protector systems (25 earmuffs, 5 combinations of earplugs and earmuffs, 3 earplugs): NIOSH/OSHA short method; Botsford short method; 2-number method. Noise spectra, hearing protector data and results of the calculations are listed in tables. It is recommended that the Botsford method with a 6dB safety factor be promoted as the best simplified method for evaluating hearing protector performance.
