Abstract Bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate - often referred to as di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) - and butyl glycolyl butyl phthalate (BGBP), plasticisers which may be leached into the blood from medical devices with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) parts, were found to cause significant growth inhibition in cultures of the human diploid cell strain WI-38. The ID50 (dose causing 50% growth inhibition) values were 70 and 12Ámol for DEHP and BGBP respectively. Toxic levels for DEHP were comparable to concentrations found in blood which has been stored in PVC bags for up to 21 days at 4░C. ID50 values are reported for other phthalate esters and for 2 non-phthalide compounds leachable from PVC medical devices.
