Abstract Report on research undertaken in white rats to determine the effect of sulfur dioxide (SO2) inhalation on glycogenolysis. A concentration of 10mg/m3 of SO2 produced a dramatic fall in the pulmonary adenosine triphosphate level (to 3 times lower than the control value), while the lactic acid level was doubled. Anaerobic glycogenolysis in the lung homogenate tended to increase. No effect of SO2 on anaerobic glycogenolysis in the liver tissue was observed at the concentration studied. The authors point to the carcinogenic effects of SO2.
