Abstract Results of a study carried out on 108 steelworkers operating blast furnaces, open-hearth furnaces and rolling mills. In the case of small water losses (less than 2,000 ml per shift), a tendency to extracellular dehydration and metabolic acidosis was observed. Progressively, as the water losses increase (more than 5,000 ml per shift) the tendency to hyponatraemia in the extracellular fluid, to extracellular acidosis and a significant loss of intracellular potassium were found. Suggestions are made for correcting potassium loss and disturbance of the acid-base balance.
