Abstract Mathematical calculation of the insulation resistance required to protect a person against electric shock if he is accidentally in contact with the mercury cell and the ground, with the mercury cell and the chlorine collector, or with the chlorine collector and the ground. It is concluded that the total ground insulation should be at least 500Ω for each volt of operating voltage. The basic measures recommended are to provide insulated floors and to insulate the cell and ground collectors, as well as the collectors themselves.
