Abstract After having emphasised the importance of proper pre-employment and periodic testing of visual aptitudes, the author reviews in chapters 1 and 2 the tests available and indicates the visual requirements for various categories of personnel. Chapters 3 and 4 are devoted to eye protective equipment and the visual adaptation of the task, including a discussion of lighting standards. Chapters 5, 6 and 7 deal with the in-plant management of eye injuries (mechanical, chemical and thermal). The remaining chapters deal with the one-eyed employee, contact lenses in industry, visual requirements for motor vehicle operators, the evaluation of ocular impairment, etc.
