Abstract Numerous cases of skin cancer have been observed over the last 10 years among workers in the metal trades using mineral oils. This article examines the question from the experimental point of view and describes how skin and even lung tumours, often malignant, were obtained in mice by applying cutting fluids and quenching oils. Malignant tumours were observed only on animals treated with used fluids and oils. Analysis brought out the fact that used oils contain more carcinogenic substances. It is advisable to change cutting or quenching fluids frequently and to take precautions against splashes.
