Abstract Ventilation measurements carried out in 21 operating theatres showed that only 2 of them had the minimum air exchange rate of 2000 m3/h required by Swedish standards. Results of measurements with an infrared analyser to determine the nitrous oxide concentrations in these operating theatres during operations are reproduced. The author established correlations between nitrous oxide concentrations and the air exchange both for theatres with and without local exhaust systems. He proposes a method for calculating personnel exposure to different anaesthetics. The minimum air exchange rate of 2000 m3/h should be observed and the room volume should be large enough to avoid draughts.
