Abstract In the 1st part of this monograph, it is suggested that new methods and means should be applied to the study of occupational diseases (including accidents) of an epidemic type which occur in developed countries. Review of the principles of epidemiological research and several basic definitions (hazard, hazard factor or indicator, etc.), giving parameters by which these may be quantified. A distinction is then made between various types of epidemiological study and, in this context, the problem is raised of choosing a group of individuals or "control" group, required to provide a comparison to subjects exposed to a hazard or affected by a disease.
