Abstract A study of the lighting of 3 workposts involving considerable eye strain: lithographic workers' luminous workbenches; mending weaves and fabric, and inspecting knitted fabric, in the textile industry. The article reviews the complaints of lithographic workers and the results of eye tests carried out on them. Laboratory experiments were carried out to quantify the diminution of visual acuity the workers complained of and which it was impossible to detect objectively. Apart from the question of the recommended level of illumination at a given workpost, the authors stress the importance of the distribution of luminance which ergonomists designing the lighting for a workpost should bear in mind.
