Abstract Maximum oxygen consumption is reduced when persons breathe an O2-poor gas mixture or exercise at high altitude. Conversely, an improvement in muscle performance should be expected when arterial blood contains additional O2. Physiological reactions during exercise were tested in 6 persons on a treadmill and a bicycle ergometer under hyperoxic and hyperbaric conditions. Methods and results are described. These results, particularly those obtained under hyperbaric conditions, demonstrate that there are certain biochemical limits to oxidative muscular reactions.
