Abstract The atmosphere of premises may be vitiated by the occupants (oxygen consumption, release of CO2, emanation of odours and humidity, generation of heat), by the work performed on the premises, or by outside air. The ambient air quality must be corrected constantly and vetilation of the premises must be ensured. Natural ventilation (doors, windows, air vents, fanlights, skylights, etc.) is of only limited and variable value. Mechanical ventilation may be local (removal of pollutants) or general (ventilation for air renewal or thermal comfort, or ventilation by conditioned air). This type of ventilation may be provided by blowing in outside air (pressurising the premises) or by exhaust ventilation to remove vitiated air (negative pressure), by a combination of both systems or by controlled mechanical ventilation. Description of fans (axial flow, centrifugal and mixed-flow).
