Abstract |
Cotton dust is clearly related to respiratory disease amongst textile workers. Although the specific aetiological agent has not been isolated, it is known that it is contained in the "trash" portion of cotton dust, the mineral and lint portions being of minor hygienic importance. Several sampling techniques for cotton dust are described, notably the vertical elutriator method which correlates well with byssinosis prevalence. Exhaust ventilation, which is available, will be necessary to reduce dust levels below the threshold limit value until the aetiological agent is isolated and can be removed from the cotton before processing. |
