Abstract Refers to confined spaces such as are found in underground excavations, wells, deep trenches, vats, etc. Recalls the French legislation on the subject, defines the nature of the hazard (gas and toxicity thresholds) and recommends safety measures. Petrol-driven engines should be avoided on account of the difficulty of purifying the exhaust gases. Mechanical and chemical means are recommended for use with Diesel engines. It is essential that the ventilation for each work site should be carefully considered and calculated beforehand.
