Abstract Comprehensive occupational physiology studies of centre-lathe, turret-lathe and milling-machine operators, automatic lathe tool setters and toolmakers from various factories, covering muscular effort, pulse rate, arterial blood pressure, and higher nervous activity during work, showed that centre and turret-lathe work is characterised by muscular tension and milling-machine operation and tool setting and toolmaking by nervous tension. Toolmaking may be classified as moderately heavy work, and machining as heavy work. Recommendations are made concerning suitable work breaks and their distribution, and compensatory gymnastics.
