Title Combined effect of asbestos exposure and smoking on mortality from lung cancer in factory workers
Bibliographic information 2 Sep. 1972, Vol.2, No.7775, p.476-479. 16 ref.
Abstract The smoking habits of over 1300 male and 480 female asbestos-factory workers were studied, and cancer mortality in this group over a 10-year period was examined. The number of deaths was compared with the expected number in the general population of the area. By adjusting the expected figures to allow for smoking habits, the influence of the occupational factor could be studied. No significant excess cancer mortality was found in workers whether smokers or non-smokers, with low to moderate exposure, but among workers who smoked and who were severely exposed, the excess was highly significant. The analysis, particularly of the data relating to the women, where there was a high proportion of non-smokers, supports the multiplicative hypothesis for the action of 2 carcinogens.
