Abstract |
Having reviewed the main features of alcoholism and drug dependency in modern society, and the effects of these two diseases on the working population, the author, dealing primarily with alcoholism, illustrates the conditions under which collaboration between employers and unions might valuably contribute to the prevention of alcoholism: systematic labour-management consultation on the elaboration of a treatment programme; good general industrial relations; high priority given by society to the need for treatment; availability of community sources for the treatment and rehabilitation of alcoholics; and full-employment policies. The author classes alcoholism as a "dangerous working condition" which should receive the full attention of safety and health efforts. |
