Abstract On the basis of all-industry official statistics for occupational diseases, silicosis incidence and prevalence in Romania over the period 1952-1967 were studied and the results obtained in the mechanical engineering industry were compared with those for mines and other industries. Epidemiological studies based on dust determinations and medical records were used to study each case by occupation, length of service, mean duration of exposure to silicogenic dusts, and radiological picture. During the period under consideration, silicosis accounted for 35% of all occupational diseases (all industries) and the mechanical engineering industry accounted for 3.1-7.2% of all cases of silicosis.
