Abstract A study of 127 non-ferrous metal smelters (49 zinc sulfate processors and 78 cadmium and zinc refiners) exposed to minimal concentrations of arsenic oxide and arsine showed that work in the zinc sulfate processing shop was significantly more hazardous than that in the cadmium and zinc refining plant. It was also found that the arsenic content of hair is a more reliable method of determining exposure than urine arsenic. Interpretation of haemolytic effects should make allowance for interference from other elements (lead, zinc, cadmium, etc.).
