Title Morbidity from acute carbon monoxide poisoning at 3-year follow-up
Bibliographic information 10 Feb. 1973, Vol.1, No.5849, p.318-321. 25 ref.
Abstract A group of 74 survivors of acute CO poisoning were followed up for an average of 3 yrs. In 8 patients gross neuropsychiatric damage was directly attributable to the poisoning; 3 other patients had committed suicide and 8 had died from other causes. Morbidity and mortality among those deliberately and accidentally poisoned was approximately equal. Of 63 patients 8 showed personality improvement and 21 (33.3%) deterioration; 27 (43%) reported subsequent impairment of memory. Deterioration of personality and memory impairment were highly correlated; level of consciousness on hospitalisation in acute poisoning phase correlated significantly with development of gross neuropsychiatric sequelae. Prompt and efficient treatment are emphasised, plus follow-up in all cases.
