Abstract This literature survey on nanotechnology consists of a critical review of the current United States regulatory framework for the protection of workers and the general population, judged insufficient. It argues in favour of precautionary principles and voluntary standards by industry, as well as increased government funding for research aimed at assessing the human health and environmental implications of nanotechnology.
