Abstract The construction industry is the most hazardous activity of all sectors covered by the French general social security system. This article discusses the use of the EPICEA occupational accident database to expand knowledge concerning the occurrence of these accidents and their victims, and to develop leads for their prevention. EPICEA lists 4385 construction industry accidents having occurred between 1991 and 2008, of which 73% occurred in building and 23% in civil engineering. Findings are discussed.
