Abstract The objective of this study was to examine the collection and reporting mechanisms of fatality data from occupational accidents used by the ILO for Latin America and the Caribbean through the analysis of the reports published by the organization from 1998 to 2007. It is concluded that there is no homogeneity in the definitions of fatal occupational injuries between the recording and notification systems in Latin America and the Caribbean, and that the absence of reliable and systematized data of this indicator constitutes a socioeconomic problem.
