Abstract Occupational stress is a relatively new risk for occupational safety and health services, and is among the emerging occupational risks identified by the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work. This article reviews the causes, consequences and mechanisms of occupational stress, and discusses the importance of identifying its causes in order to implement prevention and reduction measures.
