Abstract The objectives of this study were: to determine whether relationships exist between maintenance activities and occupational safety and health; to describe the present state of the maintenance sector; to review literature relating to maintenance and OHS; and to develop a thematic research programme. The report also includes an analysis of maintenance accidents having occurred in Quebec. The report discusses lockout, machine design, confined spaces and belt conveyors. Areas for future research are proposed, to fill some of the gaps noted during the study or to generate new solutions for the problems identified.
