Abstract The objective of this study was to link the parameters of the physical requirements of cleaning by means of a high pressure (HP) water jet, particularly work with a spray gun, to the resulting cardiac workload, in order to reduce the risks of excessive worker fatigue. Workers were observed while working under various conditions and the cardiorespiratory capacity and metabolism of workers were measured in relation to the heart rate while working under various conditions. An approach for planning work organization in order to limit fatigue-related risks is described, together with an integrated preventive approach involving monitoring the workers' heart rate, in combination with the improvements in the organization of their work.
