Abstract The objective of the study was to create an analytic basis in the field of occupational safety and health to support rational and effective decision-making for elaboration of employment and social policy programmes and for ensuring sustainable development. It involved interviews with the following groups of persons: residents of Latvia, employers, occupational safety and health specialists, employees, health and social care professionals. It also involved an analysis of available occupational safety and health data bases and existing studies. Findings reveal insufficient compliance of workplaces with legal requirements regarding occupational safety and health, as well as legal labour relations. Besides, awareness and understanding of the general public regarding such requirements is also dissatisfactory. Further attention should be paid to the simplification of legal requirements, the development of alternative methods for informing and educating the workers, employers and the public people, and a redefinition of national indicators for assessing the efficacy of occupational safety and health, and legal labour relations.
