Abstract In an effort to promote safer working conditions in the Arab region, the ILO and the Arab Labour Organization (ALO) held a workshop in Damascus, Syria, on 18-20 November 2007. In preparation for the meting, a questionnaire was addressed to the Ministries of Labour of all participating countries to obtain information on the existing national occupational safety and health conditions. These responses were used to compile this report, which served as a basis for discussion during the workshop. Contents: introduction; general data; OSH legislation and enforcement; labour inspection system; OSH education, training and information; national system for notification and recording; workers' compensation systems; occupational health services; national OSH policies an programmes; national OSH advisory body/safety council; national OSH legislation; statistics on work-related accidents and diseases; recommendations and conclusion. The report is also available in Arabic.
